Virtual Book Club: How the Other Half Eats

March 23, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Learn more about the book through these articles and interviews with the author:

Open Table’s Virtual Book Club is back!

And we want to talk about how race, culture, and media complicate what we choose to eat. We invite you to join us.

In How the Other Half Eats: The Untold Story of Food and Inequality in America, author Priya Fielding-Singh follows four families from across the income spectrum, weaving “lyrical storytelling and fascinating research into a compelling narrative” (Chronicle Review) to examine nutritional disparities in our country.

Please join us for a virtual Book-Club-style discussion on Wednesday, March 23rd, starting at 7pm, lead by Jill Tsakiris (Programs Manager) and Gina Cummings (Board Member) – see their bios below. If you want to join the club, please email us at events@opentable.org with subject “Book Club”; an email will be sent to all participants in mid-March with the link to the event. We hope to see you there!

We have a few copies of the book that we are happy to loan out! Please contact us at events@opentable.org if you would like to borrow a copy. It is also available through the Minuteman Library Network, Amazon, and many local bookstores.

Jill Tsakiris

Jill Tsakiris brought deep experience working with nonprofits to Open Table when she joined the staff in 2020. During her tenure she helped improve our operational systems to better our client experience. Ms. Tsakiris first took on the role of Acting Executive Director in March 2020 just as the pandemic hit the region. She was instrumental in pivoting operations so that there was continuity in service for our clients.  She implemented safety protocols to protect staff, volunteers, and clients. In August 2020 she joined the staff of Open Table as Program Manager.

She is skilled in general management, business development, non-profit fundraising, new market analysis, new service opportunity assessment, and evaluation of marketing effectiveness. All these skills are needed to further develop and implement mobile programming for Open Table. Ms. Tsakiris is a proven project manager, able to balance resources, schedule, and content to ensure successful delivery of project commitments. She is proficient collaborating with cross-functional teams and senior management while motivating and developing coworkers, both staff and volunteers. In her current role she has proven an effective leader of the mobile programming project. Her communication skills are invaluable to the organization, and she is a valued meeting and working group facilitator.

With a degree in physics and an MBA, Ms. Tsakiris began her career working for a variety of high-tech firms in the area ranging from medical device manufacturing to semiconductor processing. For the last two decades she spent time in a consultant role working with non-profits, the United Way organization, and finally joined Open Table.

Gina Cummings

Gina is Vice President of Advocacy, Alliances & Policy for Oxfam America where she oversees research, policy, advocacy, campaigning, and building Oxfam’s network of US allies, partners, and supporters to influence the US government and US corporations.

Prior to joining Oxfam, Gina was Chief Operating Officer of Physicians for Human Rights, a nongovernmental organization that uses medicine and science to document and advocate against mass atrocities and severe human rights violations around the world. She managed day-to-day operations and supervised senior teams that oversaw policy, media, and fundraising work; forensic investigations; research; campaigns; and human resources.

Gina’s work included looking at the impact of torture in Guantanamo prison; juvenile justice in the US; asylum and human rights in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chechnya, Sierra Leone and Rwanda; and forensic investigations to determine crimes against humanity and genocide in Guatemala, Honduras, Rwanda, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
